By the community,

for the community.

In 2015 Liz Towsend, the Families worker at St Mark’s Church, Tattenham Corner, came up with the idea of having an advent calendar worth of celebrations throughout December.  Rather than inventing 25 events she decided to pull together all the existing ideas and add a few more where needed.  Rev. Des Williamson and Liz then formed a committee of people from the local community to collaborate ideas and coordinate the events. And so that year for every day of December, there was a special event somewhere in the community in the lead up to Christmas.

From the ever popular Christmas Wreath making at the Library, to the captivating Star Trail which leads you on a journey with the Wise men of old to the Christmas cradle; from a simple Carols and Christmas cake courtesy of Merland Rise Church through to the audio-visual drama filled Christmas carol service at St Mark’s, there was  something for everyone.  The kids were invited to do some searching around the local shops as they went on a sheep trail to discover what funky names the shopkeepers had given their advent knitted sheep, and if they preferred indoor exploring they tried the library trail instead.  In 2015 Shawley Community and Warren Mead primary schools entertained the passing public at the Tattenham Corner shops and another day Epsom Downs School showed off their ocarina skills.  Christmas classic films were shown at the then new community cinema held at St. Mark's Church and there was even a family quiz night.

Tattenham Corner may be world famous for the Derby but in living memory there had never been a public Christmas Tree!  Well in 2015 that was put right with the first ever Tattenham Corner Mini Festive Market and Christmas Tree.  Since 2015, each December there has stood a Community Christmas Tree on the green, in the parade at Tattenham Corner, adorned with colourful lights and decorations created by the children of the local community.  The light switch on with mini festive market has become an annual event. and things are set to get even bigger and better, so watch this space!!!
