2016 Acknowledgements & Appreciations...

Well the 2016 Tattenham Corner Community Christmas Tree light switch on and mini Festive Market was a great success, with its longer time and more to do, there was something for everyone!

There are so many people who need to be acknowledged and thanked for their time, efforts, enthusiasm, financial backing and moral support, that made the night possible. I shall endeavour to mention them all.

The biggest hurdle this year was locating the tree on the ‘Green’ and secure power to do so. Great thanks must go to Belmont Garage MG for donating £500 and to Toyota UK who through Community Funding gave us £1800, which together provided the £2300 needed to employ UKPN and SKANSKA to install the power pillar which can now be used each year for the Christmas lights. Also, thanks must go to Surrey County Council for agreeing to pay for the power used for the festive lighting each year.

This year, the Tattenham Corner Community Christmas Tree has been paid for by El Rincon Spanish Restaurant and C3 Barbers, so thank you to Joe, Carlos and Gary. Our tree was supplied by Evergreen Wholesale Nursery again this year and was delivered free of charge as their donation to the event, which we much appreciate.

Many of our other local shops supported the event either by giving a donation to the costs of the event (such as Cloud Nine, Alan Greenwoods and Buckley’s Butchers) or by donating to the raffle table. Our raffle this year was for ‘HOUSE FOR MORGAN’ campaign and raised £243, so thank you to the public who bought tickets and to the following businesses that donated prizes: Bliss Hair Salon, BG MG car showroom, C3 Barbers, McColl’s, Co-op, Lloyds Pharmacy, Payden’s Pharmacy, Wine Rack, Cloud Nine, Bliss Holistic Therapies, Colin Bull Swim School and Howards Electrical.

Paul Gosling was once again our PA for the night and what a fantastic job he did playing us great music to get us into the festive mood!

I think you’ll agree that the children’s Baubles on the Christmas tree look wonderful and bring that extra sense of community to our tree. Thank you to the children of Little Jax Pre-School, Banstead Bunnies Pre-School, St. Marks Church Under 5s, Shawley Community Primary School Reception Classes, Epsom Downs Primary School Reception Class and our local Rainbows. In addition, the Year 1 and 2 Christmas Pictures from Shawley Community Primary School that adorned the wall of BG MG car showroom on Saturday night, gave a lovely backing to our choir and band performance area, whilst Epsom Downs Primary Ocarina and Singers, SING! Epsom Downs and 1st Tattenham Guides, Rainbows, Brownies and Trefoil Guild (and parents) entertained the audience.

We had such lovely feedback during the evening about the prettiness of our mini festive market which was in front of the Library and about the range of stalls in general. Thank you to all the stallholders who braved the cold for nearly 5 hours and thank you for providing such lovely gift and craft ideas to inspire our Christmas shopping, as well as lots of fun games and lucky dips! Many of them also made financial donations towards ‘HOUSE FOR MORGAN’ campaign so thank you in addition for that.

Many of you took advantage to step in out of the cold and grab a hot drink and slice of cake from our Tearoom in the Library. Thank you to all the volunteers at the library and to 1st Tattenham Guides for those delicious cakes! In addition, the other food available as part of the event from both Buckley’s Butchers BBQ with those mouth-watering burgers, and the scrummy Paella from El Rincon helped to keep everyone contented while they browsed and waited for the tree to come alive with lights.

A HUGE thank you has to go out to Kelvin and the 1st Tattenham Scouts, who helped erect the tree, decorate the tree, erect the stalls and mini festive market, run the chestnut stall, as well as clear away at the end of the event. It was a long day and without their hard work, there would have been nothing for everyone to come and see.

Our Special Guest – Former Crystal Palace Footballer and now match day correspondent on Sky Sports, John Salako, proved immensely popular and added that extra special highlight for many members of the public as they queued to have their photos taken with him. Thank you for attending our event and doing the important job of leading our countdown and plunging the lights on with Morgan.

Behind the scenes, there have been lots of people working hard before the event as well to ensure it has been well publicised and embraced the 21st century by getting us on Facebook, Twitter and our very own webpage. Thank you to all the leaflet distributors who volunteered their time to deliver over 7000 leaflets through letterboxes in our local area, which promote not just the launch night but all the other wonderful events we have in our community this advent. If you haven’t yet looked or do not have a copy, you can download it from our website or view an interactive calendar in ‘Community Christmas’ – ‘Advent Calendar 2016’.

Hours have been spent by Jon Cranefield working tirelessly, to develop the branding of Tattenham Corner Community Confederation, building the website and working with his wife to design the flyers and leaflets. His support (and patience) has been immense and without it Kirsty would not have been able to coordinate the launch night event and publicity for this year’s Community Christmas and Advent Calendar.

It has been requested by a member of the public that acknowledgement goes to the Tattenham Corner Community Confederation which is a team of volunteers, who spend the whole year (yes, we start in January making preparations for the next event!) making decisions and running around organising so that everything is ready for the big night. Your confederation members are Liz Townsend (Chairwoman and Families Worker of St. Marks Church), Rev. Des Williamson (Treasurer and Minister of St. Marks Church), Kirsty Cranefield (Secretary, Christmas event co-ordinator and Publicity), Councillor Nicholas Harrison (Councillor for Surrey and Tattenhams Residents Association), Lesley Beard (Manager of Tattenhams Community Library), Ian Pattison (Manager of Tattenham Corner Co-op), Gary Mann (An Elder of Merland Rise Church) and Ruth Warren (Administrator of Merland Rise Church).

For anyone we have missed, we apologise most sincerely as we are grateful for every ounce of encouragement and support from everyone.

Thank you to the community for turning out to support our 2016 Tattenham Corner Community Christmas Launch Night and may we wish you a very joyful and safe festive season.
